BOO!
Sorry if I scared you turning up out of the blue but… you know… I’ve missed ya! So I thought I’d jump right on in and say “Boo”.
Life lately has been a little all over the place and one of the results of life being somewhat messy was that my creative colliding brain cells decided to crash and burn… like ‘POOF’! There one minute, powdery ash falling from the sky the next.
Last week I found myself missing having some sort of creative outlet so I decided to give ‘Morning Pages’ a go.
If you haven’t heard of ‘Morning Pages’ they are three pages of longhand, stream of consciousness writing, done first thing in the morning as explained by inventor/creator Julia Cameron here.
You can write about absolutely anything you like. Let it flow and don’t edit as you go. It’s for your eyes only so give yourself permission to cut loose, is what I told myself.
All I can say is thankfully there is no right or wrong way to do Morning Pages. Just when I thought my creativity was starting to kick in again, rising from the ashes like a phoenix, POOF! Up in smoke she went again.
As my inner three year old self was about to metaphorically scuff my foot through the pile of settled cinders in a monumental dramatic display of a toddler tantrum dummy spit, these words from Kelly Exeter popped into my head (I’m paraphrasing of course because I don’t have the exact quote and relying on my dodgy memory).
“You can edit the crap out of 800 crappy words, but you can’t edit the crap out of a blank page”
Seth Godin popped in for some air time as well (again, paraphrasing).
“No one wakes up with talker’s block, so if you write like you talk you’ll always have something to say!”
So here I am, scaring the crap out of you turning up out of the blue, tapping out a few odd crappy words that really haven’t had the crap edited out of them because I just want to hit publish and say “Hello” and you know what? I’m really surprised at how good it feels.
I want to keep doing it!
So I’m making a commitment to myself to turn up here once a week, maybe twice if I can manage it with all that’s going on at the moment, because I really like writing and sharing my thoughts with you. I hope you enjoy reading them… even the crappy stuff… I’m no wordsmith… I’ll try hard not to waffle and publish to much crappy stuff. I don’t like writing fluff for the sake of content creation.
Let’s see how it goes hey!
And I do owe a couple of bloggy pals a post about my Problogger conference experience a few months ago; even though that ship has well and truly sailed.
There’s much to tell about what’s been happening around here so if you don’t want to miss the updates you can subscribe over there on the right in my sidebar to get new posts straight to your inbox. Or you can pop in with a cuppa in hand anytime to say hi. You’re always welcome. Oh, and so you aren’t disappointed I’ll say straight up there’ll be no baked goodies here to tuck into with your cuppa. You’ll have to bring your own, because I bloody hate baking as much as I bloody hate cooking!
See you soon.
Sandra x
Go you! I’ve been writing morning pages too. I find it very therapeutic. Haven’t published anything for yonks though and I can completely relate to every single word you’ve written in this post. I could hear my own voice (are you sure I didn’t write it?) Who cares if it’s fluffy? It’s your blog! I think we both put too much pressure on ourselves. Looking forward to hearing from you again soon Sandra. You’ve got this! xx
Thank you so much lovely Shauna! It’s so nice having you in my corner cheering me on. Let’s make a pact to be kinder to ourselves hey!
Thanks so much for stopping by Shanua! 🙂 Xx
Hooray you’re back. So happy you have managed to squeeze in time to write xxx
Hey there Kooky!
Thanks for the hearty welcome back! I’m trying to take a leaf out of your book and write things down first thing in the morning. Well… not toooo early ‘first thing’ in the morning! 😉
Thanks so much for stopping by Kooky chic. 🙂 Xx
We will have a virtual glass of bubbly every morning at 5am to celebrate our writing skills then 🙂 x
Hmmm… I may be a tad late 😉
I’m so pleased to see you back – I’ve missed you. When it comes to writing, don’t overthink it, just do it! I look forward to seeing you back here next week. Shout me if you need an accountability partner 🙂
Too kind Sammie! And you’re right – life’s too short to spend it over thinking too much about anything really.
Thanks so much for stopping by. 🙂 Xx
Sooo not crappy words! Love reading your posts.
Meryl, that’s so lovely of you! Thank you so much for taking the time to stop by and leave these kind words for me. I’m glad my words resonate with you in some way. 🙂 Xx
Morning Pages huh. God what if I die in the night and someone reads them! Good to see you back Sandra.
I know!!! What if that actually happened??? (insert hand held worried face) Thanks for stopping by my friend. 😉 Xx
